About the Mac

Collaborative Leadership

for a Strong Military Community

The Shreveport-Bossier Military Affairs Council (MAC) was established in 1986 by the Shreveport and Bossier Chambers of Commerce to strengthen the relationship between the civilian community and leadership at Barksdale Air Force Base. Created in recognition of the base’s importance to national defense and the regional economy, MAC serves as a bridge between military leadership, business leaders, elected officials, and the broader community.

As a nonprofit civic organization, MAC advocates for the continued mission readiness and long-term strategic value of Barksdale Air Force Base while fostering strong community support for military personnel and their families. Its membership includes business leaders, community advocates, and retired military personnel dedicated to strengthening the connection between the base and Northwest Louisiana.

Over the years, MAC has led and supported numerous initiatives designed to honor service members, promote military family engagement, and increase public awareness of Barksdale’s impact on the region. One of its most significant contributions has been its partnership with base leadership in supporting the Defenders of Liberty Air Show, which has grown into one of the region’s largest public events and a major driver of tourism and economic activity.

MAC also developed community engagement initiatives such as Celebrate Barksdale, an appreciation program that began in 1996 and has since expanded into a year-round calendar of events connecting military families with the local community.

Today, MAC continues its mission of advocacy, partnership, and support by maintaining strong relationships with military leaders, civic officials, legislators, and community partners to help ensure Barksdale remains a vital component of America’s strategic defense network and a proud cornerstone of the Shreveport-Bossier community.
